It is a rainy, cold yucky day, so Kevin and Sarah answer questions in front of the wood stove about the woven weed fabric, about the pig breeding and upcoming dispatching, and discuss their Blue Slate turkeys, Kevin's parent's move to the farm house, and a channel schedule change.

****** About Living Traditions Homestead ******
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Tuesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

If you can raise ducks, get Muscovies. They are extremely broody, big meat duck, very thrifty, and healthy. They prefer to free range and the only downside is if you live on a busy road they will cross the road and become road kill.

Drowning is exactly what domesticated turkeys do when it’s raining. My uncle in Oklahoma used to raise turkeys and one summer we went up there to visit them on summer vacation. I was 12 at the time. It started raining and my uncle came in and said, come on kids and help me get the turkeys into their building. Me and my cousins all ran with him toward the turkey yard and started shooing the turkeys inside their building. I asked my uncle why the turkeys didn’t go in by themselves. These were a breed of all white turkeys he raised and he had hundreds of them. He said they were so stupid that they would stand out there in the rain with their mouths open, pointed toward the sky, and drown if he didn’t run them inside. I had never heard that before!

Guys I totally love the weed fabric. Game changer! Boars are certainly single minded when they meet the sows. Oh my you guys awesome your parents are moving there! Turkeys.. ugh. I've tried several breeds. I had the best luck with Bourbon reds but all the hens go broody. I took the eggs until I had 5 gave them to the hen. She will tuck them in and brood, just hand them to her one at a time. Same for my geese, I gather 5 or so eggs and give them to my best broody.
Michael Price
Michael Price 4 ամիս առաջ
Not sure how you feel about them but I am team Narragansett all the way, I've raised them for about 5 years and beside the hen who ran off with the wild tom before I fixed their enclosure, I've had a very good success rate. Although my hens do get broody I don't let them set, I gather and incubate. I have a rather robust breeding and turn over rate for my poultry. I think Narragansetts are fairly close to native birds that they still have some survival instinct in them, at least enough to not commit suicide, which is something some turkeys just do. There's a reason why calling someone a turkey is an insult, they are just dumb birds.

I would suggest red bourbon. I may not have the cold you have but they are a breed that are from cold country on the east. I've raised them for 9 years. They are friendly and curious. I've had no problems with them getting out of the rain. No problems with females staying on the clutches and hatching poults. My biggest issue has been with males fighting each other. We solved that by processing.

i grew up on my grandmas farm, she had over 500 pigs with around 200 breeding sows. That said my job during harvest was feeding them, as a child i watched alot. One sow i remembered protected me when feeding time by that i mean she kept all away untill i put in the trough then the free for all happened. I found after a spell they would come running to me upon entry to there pen. I hated the boar and he me. so he always stayed a far distance away. The sows all become very tame to me. i loved feeding them since they become very friendly. I enjoyed my time with the pigs and never forgot it now 50 years later i wish you all the luck. My favorite sow would run to me for a scratch every time i was in the pen, she protected me from any other pig. good times i had with her around guarding me cheers

We had really good luck with Royal Palms for heritage breed turkeys. They did well despite all the rain in NW Washington. We did have trees in their area, though, and they would go under those when it rained as well as an 8 x 8 open-sided covered area. Smarter than a lot of turkeys and beautiful. I felt they were heartier than blue slates as well. The females are generally pretty broody. Our Gina tried to hatch out some duck eggs, but the ducks always bullied her out at night. She also sat on her own eggs once she gave up on that.

Word of warning! A sweet docile sow, even raised by hand, when she has pigs the hormones can ever so rarely in the occasional animal, go crazy. The sweet pig you raised can...kill...you. Caution until you see if that severe hormonal imbalance has happened. Even if it is only one sow out of a hundred, if you're that unlucky it's serious business.

I have had really good experiences with my beltsville small turkeys. They are hardy birds that reproduce well. Being smaller they are easier to handle. You have more options when cooking them. You can process them younger and have fryers. Or let them grow out to have a roasting bird. Being white they produce a nice looking finished product .
