****** About Living Traditions Homestead ******
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

You need an electric fence that is designed for sheep. Sheep have thick wool, so a electric fence needs to be strong enough to get past that wool. Trust me, those pigs will not run that type of electric fence, the electric from that type of fence will knock you down, ask my now X husband. 😝

Can I ask you a silly question? Why do y'all raise pigs when there are wild boar all over the US? I would think that wild pork tastes better. Aren't there loads of feral pigs roaming the countryside, reeking havoc? Hunting would seem to be a fine hobby as long as hunters aren't leaving pre-packaged trash everywhere, which they do....

Sow farms keep teaser board to walk down the isle to check for heat. Some sow farms that are getting away from gestation crates because of the liberal trouble makers have a boar penned in a corner. When a sow approaches an rfid tag reader records her visits. Each morning the breeder looks on the computer to find sows hanging around highlighted on the computer screen and no which sows to breed that morning. So the boar ran with a sow for three heat cycles and you assume she is bred? It’s time to sell her.

Had a friend with a hobby farm...one of her horses learned how to open the door into the kitchen, just by watching...interesting to walk down the hall to see what dogs are fussing about...and there is a horse standing just looking at me! I hollered for her to come here...quick, but didn't say why...she came running down hall, and slid to a stop...wish I'd had my cell phone in my hand for a pic!! Horse didn't want back out, had already found box of dog snacks...was foraging for more...finally had to go out to feed room in barn and get a bucket with feed to bribe him out!! And he kept trying to get back in, following when we unloading big bag dogfood, and unloading groceries...

You do alot And you know how to take a pause You're not afraid to live; not afraid to share; not afraid to fall down, and not afraid to get back on the horse. And when you are, you simply do it anyway. That's pretty dang cool if I say so myself. Thanks for the video.

Not the barrel, but where they drink from? As a kid, when we lived in St Louis, we vacationed many times in the Ozarks & at Bennett Spring.

Couple of questions: 1. How do you figure out how many t-posts you need? 2. How do you find your straight line for those t-posts? 3. Do you have any type of set up that allows that water barrel to fill up with water on it's own from the rain by chance?

My dad says that he couldn't keep pigs in an electric fence in the winter, because they had extra hair that insulated them from the wire. He used to have one that would nose open the doorknob and come into the house at night to sleep on the couch.

Hi , Kevin and Sarah, I would like to invite you to the Idaho Pasture Pig (IPP) page on FB we have @3400 folks all interested in IPP's. It is very common with young gilts to reject breeding when first attempted and also common for IPP boars to be a little timid their first year. I have 2 gilts in the same situation as you do one bred and the other didn't when first put together..... for the above reasons it is recommended to put the boar and gilts together until gilt shows signs of being close to farrowing and then move them to a farrowing area. I will generally leave my boar and gilts together until I move a gilt to a farrowing area.... I put my boar and gilts together the 1st of Dec and they are still together, I believe one to be bred and the other was just covered last week.... we will watch for a heat cycle over the next few weeks to see if it took. I wouldn't move Charlie away from her now until it is known for sure she is bred by not returning into a heat cycle.....

Raised hogs for decades here. Worst ones were the timber hogs. My husband and his brother used to run those sows into the cattle sorting pens when it was time to ship them. Those 6 to 700lb sows were hard to confine. Always took a week or so to trick some of them into the corral. They also had really bad attitudes.

I have two barrows I'm raising for meat, and I never could get them out to my woods because they would NOT respect the electric fence. I train mine by starting them in a pen with an electric wire on the inside of the hog fencing, so that when they hit the wire they can't jump forward through it. They learn to back away from it. Supposedly. These guys learned to root up the posts that the wire is strung on. Knock down the post; short out the wire ! Too smart for their own good ! So they spent the entire 6 months in a 16x32 ft run instead of enjoying five acres of heavy woods.

Understand that if Charlie smells a sow in heat a T post is not going to stop him. He will bend it over like a strand of grass and keep on going. Just an FYI
Renee Brown
Renee Brown 29 օր առաջ
Wire works with babies and feeders but a full on boar or sow will not be controlled by a wire unless it's a high voltage wire that will kill them. They are stubborn and willful. Rather than using T posts we cemented 4" metal pipe 4 foot in the ground and used hog panels and hot wire too. But honestly a block walled pen is the best. They can climb some and are much stronger than you think.

Renee Brown

There is only 1 way to keep pigs in a pen. You have to make it bull strong and goat smart. They are very " pig headed" and stubborn as hell and when they want somewhere they will keep fighting to get there or die trying.

We had to rent a T Post driver like that. Our ground is rock hard in the summer, and using a manual pounder was out of the question when we put up a fence a few years back. I think that the large area you are making for your boar would be a good place to raise your feeder pigs, although I don't know if they are compatible with boars. Good job on your new enclosure!

Guys, I love your channel, but I need you to stop using the hopelessly desperate teaser names for your videos. Use a naming process that allows people to know what information is contained in the video. I’m sure there is some guide that tells you to do this as it is supported by the algorithm. You risk losing your regular viewers by wasting their time, I have deprioritized watching your videos since you have shifted over.
