Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

I had to watch this because I bought a couple years ago a 3 set (brand new with tags) of cast iron frying pans for under $12.00 at a thrift store. Since my ceramic lined pans are going to crap, I want to start using these cast iron pans.

This was so educational! I had no idea how to strip a cast iron pan. I also didn't realize you have to season the pre-seasoned cast iron. I've learned so much from this video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge of cast iron. I think now I can finally get rid of the last of my teflon skillets! Cast iron cooking here I come!👍

Great video. When I was little, it was my job to clean the cast iron pan after dinner. We never put our pans in the water. To removes stuck on food we added water to the pan, cooked on low heat and worked the stuck on food loose. Then dumped the dirty water out and wiped the pan with a coat of oil as you did. Ready for the next meal!

Someone gave me a cast iron pan on and I used it a couple times and then I put it in the sink with dish soap and I jacked it all up and I couldn't really figure out how to fix it n I just threw it away.... because I was so dumb I didn't think about looking online how to season it or whatever... it was just too much work it seemed🙄...Dumb I know

I haven't done a lot of cooking so what is medium high heat? Is that a 7 or 8 heat setting? Is Coconut oil to season any good or can you use the grease from cooking bacon to season?

For hooks go to Home Depot $1 per black rubber bungie strap with a hook on both ends... so the hooks cost .50 cents each and you will not have to bend them. Cast iron should never go above medium heat because you risk warping of cracking it, also it starts to burn the seasoning off the pan. You can now use modern soap (like Dawn) on cast iron because it no longer contains lye, lye is what you use to strip the old seasoning. only the hottest water in a hot pan so you dont crack or warp it... this is super important expecially when dealing with antique pans with thin walls.

I've made this rack... make sure to scrub the pipe and fittings before making cause they are dirty! Also the cheapest way to get hooks in at Home Depot, for $1 they sell a rubber bungie strap (like the type yo see on the road all the time) with 2 hooks on it.

I ALWAYS love your videos. As has been said, you get to the point, and that is such a welcome bonus. I do not live on a homestead -- pushing 70 and feel that's beyond me at this point. But, oh the bundle of things I've learned from you. I thank the Lord for you. Even though I have a very small garden, I do a lot of canning & dehydrating. One thing I'd like to see you do a video on is how (depth & spacing) you plant things from seeds that many people buy as starter plants. How deep to plant tomatoes, onions, etc. and how to prepare the soil to receive the seeds. Would also be interested in learning a bit about composting. May the Lord continue to bless you/your family as your grow a following of people from many different backgrounds!

You would be amazed what people use kitchen things for that are really dangerous that should cause them to toss it away especially those porous items like cast iron and plastics and even glass. Fabulous information. If you ever do another video on cast iron, here are some questions: ROUGH CAST IRON: I bought a takoyaki grill in cast iron on Amazon. It is so rough that you just can't flip the food, which is absolutely necessary. I should have sent it back. Too late now. I tried it, and it is worthless. Can I sand it to make it smoother? WHEN TO OIL: Most instructions say to put oil on before heating. Is that not as good as heating first? Also I have heard to condition in the oven. Why is stove-top better. OIL TO CONDITION: I would think that lard could get rancid easier than a more neutral oil. Please elaborate why you don't use simple oil if you do another iron video.

I really appreciate you sharing what knowledge you have about pans gardening etc. We live not far from your farm. So it's great to know it's possible with our weather!! I'd like to find out what Farmers market you go to because I rather get things from you if we do not have them in our garden!! I can't wait to start our garden. This year will be a little rough though we only have a little square patch to do and it has been living in a complex and they have permitted us to do that but our rooted to our broke last year. But now there's only a limit to what I can do physically. LOL I'll probably be there with a garden rake LOL. Keep the videos coming. I only have two cast iron pants the Dutch oven which we bought baked bread in and a frying pan. All the rest of our things can wise were lost in a fire a couple years ago and we just haven't even placed them yet. I really want to plant some tiny timbs this year. They are so flavorful one tiny tiny Tim tastes like you have just eaten up an entire tomato. They are pretty fantastic if you haven't seen them pick them up in the seed catalogues. Please remember to let me know where your Farmers market is okay?? Thank you and God bless

Excellent video! I got a fantastic cast iron 2 part pot for a wedding gift back in 1979. The base is a cooking pot and the top is a frying pan. I had no clue how to season it and of course it got all sticky from improper seasoning. Stuck it away in a cupboard and never used it! So now I will dig it out, and restore the seasoning. Thanks! Also, I have a smooth top stove and have heard not to use cast iron on it? Is that so? Thanks again!

Soap will not strip the seasoning from a properly seasoned pan. If you have done tour seasoning correctly (which your method does not do) you have polymerized the oil. Soap will not remove polymerized oil. I’ve been using soap on my pans for decades with no adverse affects.

Very good video. Growing up in the 50s and 60s my father’s mother lived with us and she would only cook in cast iron pans. Moreover, she would only use wooden or plastic utensils with her cast iron. One didn’t dare use a metal utensil on her cast iron. I was surprised to see you folks using metal utensils. What gives? By the way I still have one of her skillets, 102 years old and still going strong.

I have a much smaller iron collection than what you have even shared. I am jealous. I got most of mine from my mother, who got it from her mother, from her mother, etc. I have no idea how old it is and there are no marks, or at least no manufacturer. I don't really care. I have a pan the size of the one you used for the eggs. It's my egg pan, only eggs go in it. I can fit 3 if I am really hungry. I don't think I have put water in it for 4 years or more. Been looking for a medium sized griddle for a while but no luck. Just ordered a 10-1/2" Lodge on line. Can't wait to season it. I really enjoy ya'lls videos. Glad I found the channel. We also have a significant collection of Wagner and Griswold cast iron skillets and Dutch ovens that are over 100 years old. Most people buy all of the cheap throw away skillets and other cookware that doesn’t last. Good cast iron will last many many generations if it is properly cared for. We pour a little water in the skillet while it is still hot to remove anything may have stuck, then just wipe it with a paper towel.

I have probably watched 50 videos on cast iron and this is the best 👌. 2 questions? I always thought or read the best way for seasoning with heat was in the oven? Do you do it all on top ? And I really noticed you use paper (I did see the oil rag also) towel to dry. When I try and use paper towels it leaves bits of paper. Inside and out. Will that get better or is there something I need to do?That's on my new Cuisinel Dutch oven. My fry pan is better (I've had it longer ) is lard better than flaxseed oil ? And I use large grain salt to help clean bits out of my fry pan. Two more things I read . help?
