Thanksgiving is NEXT WEEK! And Sarah is planning something DIFFERENT than plain old Pumpkin Pie. She's using Canada Crookneck squash for her pie with homemade lard crust and cinnamon brandy whipped cream!

Lard Pie Crust Ingredients:
3 cups flour
1 cup lard
Dash salt
Ice water as needed
Squash Pie Ingredients:
4 cups squash puree
4 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 cup sugar
2 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp ginger
2 pie crusts
Cinnamon Brandy Whipped Cream Ingredients:
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp brandy extract

You can cook the squash and pumpkins, in the Instant Pot for 20 mins. Makes great pie and cuts down 1 hr roasting time. Also I throw in whole sugar pie pumpkins and spaghetti squash in the Instant Pot not cut or even pierced and the hard skin literally peels off!

My grandmother taught me the wax paper trick too! Only difference..... she dampened her counter slightly and the wax paper stuck to it. I might try your dads way next time............ if I can find the tape! : )

My favorite way to make pie crusts is to use a food processor. It literally takes seconds. You keep your butter or lard in the right amounts for your recipe in the freezer (cut into the size of 2-3 butter pats each). Put flour and butter or lard in basin of your food processor with the blade. Turn on the processor & when the flour mixture has the pea size crumbs look, drizzle in the cold water through the chute in top of the basin. Faster than your eye can see, you have a perfectly blended dough ball. I also keep 4-5 pie crusts ready to go, in pie pans, prepared ahead of time and stacked in the freezer in super large zip lock bags.

Do you realize that you just did something I have never seen anybody do in the hundreds of canning videos and I knew why you did it but you have never mentioned it that I know of. You used the ring to remove the canning lid so that it wouldn't be damaged and you could reuse it. I guess you knew it ? If not thanks especially for that tip. Probably the best canning tip I have ever seen.I've been canning for 40 yrs.

Cooked that way the skin becomes soft and very sweet I love just letting them slow bake like that I cook sweet potatoe the same way

You don't have to tape your wax paper down. Take and wet your counter top slightly and the paper will stick to the counter top.

Wow I can never look at squash the same again, thanks for that visual, hummmh I can never grow, handle or use a Canada Crookneck because all I will think of is a bris- ouch. Anyway I will stick with the big old pumpkins or sweet potato. We use the same technique but never thought to tape it down, one can also use plastic wrap. A WORD TO THE WISE ON OIL- MUST BE ORGANIC AND COLD PRESSED FOR HEALTH, look at Amazon they have great prices on Nutiva and it will get delivered free with prime. The other processes including expeller or low heat will destroy the nutrients and change the oils good attributes to negative. Hope that helps and keep sharing, I want you to know that all these videos inspired us to invest in a quality stove with all the gadgets and it comes this week, can't wait, I don't know what to cook first, probably everything. Bon appetit and I am off to eat some pumpkin pie and yes from our garden and not Canada even if we are 4 hours away, lol. Blessings and good health for all!

Hey, just watched your winter squash failures and want to suggest the North Georgia Candy Roaster (I believe Baker Creek has seeds). Last summer these did very well for us and we live in zone 6b much like your climate. We roast the squash in the oven like you did, these make amazing pie and soups, shelf life is around 5-months.

Ice water works great, but if you’re willing to use alcohol try vodka. Makes the crust more puffy and flackery Does not change the flavor

Enjoy your AM-posts channel. Flakiest pie crust I ever made was using my mother-in-law's recipe using lard instead of Crisco. 2 cups flour, 1 cup lard or Crisco, 1/2 cup ice water for double crust pie or 2 single crust.. Perfect every time.

I had thought of using winter squash to make my "pumpkin" pies for several years and would forget and make all pumpkin. I seen your video and had a butternut squash on the counter, so sliced "gutted" and baked. I only had enough "meat" for one pie, so I mixed it with an equal amount of pumpkin. No one knew about my substitution and raved about how creamy and flavorful the pumpkin pie was. I came clean and confessed. Next "pumpkin" pie occasion, I will try one all butternut and one blended. Thank you for the great reminder at the perfect time! ❤️

Oh my this is so good. I had a Blue/Green squash I baked this week . Made your pie with it. Oh yum. Your recipe is delicious. Thank you for the awesome recipe.I’ve never had this kind of squash before . I was told in Europe they cook these squash in slices and eat it like that. I have to say this squash has replace my sweet potatoes .

Sorry I'm going there I wouldn't have thought twice about that just didn't even ring a bell but when you said that just bursted into laughing but I wanted to tell you I'm trying your heavy whipping cream with powdered sugar cinnamon and Brandy except I'm not going to use Brandy I'm going to use Kahlua it's a coffee liqueur and since pies are normally served with coffee I thought that might be just a little different cuz I don't have Brandy extract so I thought I'd just try that and thank you so much for your recipe this is Wednesday and I have been working since Dawn on ties and crispr Thanksgiving fixings that I can do ahead of time and I I am 60 years old almost and I am dead tired and I still have two Jell-O salads to do I say it won't take me long but my feet and back aren't you cooperating that much anymore and I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving with your family and your loved ones and God bless cuz I'm not forgetting the blessing he put upon you this year in fact many blessings love you guys

Good evening from Wisconsin, love watching your channel, & yes I also had to giggle about the “talk” u had with us the viewers About not leaving the squash comments, u had an exceptional funny way of basically telling people to grow up At least during this filming...u go girl... also if your interested in a little hack I use for measuring lard, butter, shortening Etc. In a cup is place a fairly good size piece of plastic wrap inside the measuring cup, tap the cup on the counter as u fill it, then when u r ready to release the contents just pull the plastic up out of the cup and. Wala u have a clean measuring cup. I greatly despise having to wash out anything that has that type of contents in it especially if it’s a plastic container. Thought I would share that as I have used that hack for years, and I am now 65,

Hey, Sarah!! I baked 2 pies, 1 pumpkin and 1 apple. I have been baking pies since 1977. I do make a mean pie!!! Anyway, I tried, for the first time, to use the wax paper trick to roll out my dough. It saved me a big mess of flour all over my kitchen and it was really easy. I was able to get the crust inside the pie tin and on top of the apple pie more evenly and easier. THANK YOU FOR THAT SIMPLE TIP!!!! It worked great!!! 😊🥧💖

Lard is wonderful in pastry but here in the UK we weigh the ingredients. Pastry is half fat to flour for a simple pastry. So if you use 8oz of flour, you use 4oz of lard. Saves on washing up... lol

the last time I made crust was some time ago, and I made 15 pies so that 30 pie crust, so I have made a lot of pie crust and everyone love my crust, but my grandma it the one who trained me to cook so I been cooking and baking for a long time now so if it was bad they would not eat it lol but was worried about if i had good pie , no my pie is always good lol and your look good , i will try to make on thanks

I was devastated to find the pumpkin pie I bought from the store had turned into a complete mess in our fridge because someone didn’t put it in the freezer to store until thanksgiving and I wasn’t going to go buy another. I came across your video and realized I had two butternut squash left over in storage and low and behold I can’t stop eating the leftover raw filling while the two pies are in the oven baking!! Ceylon is REAL cinnamon and good for you and fairly expensive, cassia “cinnamon” is the common substitute we all buy in the grocery stores and can actually be a little toxic.

I use a serrated grapefruit spoon to scoop out squash meat. You get every bit out easily.

If you give the bowl a shake, all the large bits will go to the top so you don't have to dig down and warm the flour and fat up too much.

Try deviled goose eggs. And if you wash your fresh eggs, give them a light coating of mineral oil & put them in a carton & place them in a cool, dry place. They will store for up to a year with no refrigeration. If you want to test this, prepare a dozen eggs this way & cook 1 egg every month & taste it. I'll bet the last one will taste as good as the first.
