Seed companies throughout the country are having record years and because of that they are taking longer to ship orders. This year is more important that ever to order early.

****** About Living Traditions Homestead ******
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Although I don't think there will be a plant start, or seed shortage. Companies such as Plantation Products(Ferry Morse) are behind most big box seed brands. Saying that, what I have seen is the selection of varieties is not as diverse this year. Most nurseries tend to grow routine varieties that you may not want if you don't try to get those special varieties you want early. Luckily, those who save seeds are not in such a hurry. I would save peas, but they seem to always to get bugs hatch out of them. If I didn't have them in an air tight container those winged bugs would be everywhere in my house. Once the gardening bug spreads, there will be more sold and fewer at the stores. I bought some seeds a month ago when I saw them at a Lowes. This year I will be growing some pepper and tomato varieties away from each other to help stop crosses. Last year I had some Yellow patty pan squash plants and they had to have crossed with a pumpkin because they were very orange and rounder. They also didn't taste real good either. I have started to keep a seed inventory to make life easier. Speaking of seeds, I had a surprise when I bought seed packets that were empty, or had holes from packaging.

Speaking of backaches, I already have one from topping off my beds with compost. That, and planting my first two rounds of seed starts. I have 5 varieties of onion (yellow Spanish, yellow cippolini, red globe, red cippolini, and Texas Grano), 2 varieties of cabbage (early Jersey Wakefield and Mammoth Red), rainbow Swiss chard, Straight 8 cucumbers, and National Pickling cucumbers. My back tends to go out anyway, and it went out big time last weekend. Still popping Aleve to help get it back in place.

I am growing 4 pepper varieties, all from Baker Creek. Lipstick, Nadapeno, sweet banana peppers, and Golden Cal Wonder. My wife loves yellow bell peppers, so the Golden Cal Wonder should fill the bill.

Fresh eating, as in tomato sandwiches (my personal favorite). I have 2 varieties of beefsteak tomatoes I am trying this year. One is an experiment in saving seed from last year, called Big Beef. The other is one from Baker Creek, but I don't remember the name right now. I also have Roma tomatoes for sauce and paste, and one cherry tomato variety.

I love Baker Creek. We went to their Spring festtival in 2019 but unfortunately it has been cancelled this year because of Covid-19. I ordered my seeds early and have them ready but haven't started them yet as I don't have a great place for seedlings. Most of the seeds will have to wait to be started in the outside beds. We live about 3 hours from you in SW Missouri just south of Neosho. I get over to your area occasionally because my step-mother lives in Willow Springs and I have cousins in Mtn. View and West Plains.

So happy to see this. I have been looking for Chicago Pickling cucumbers for years. I heard you say Chicago pickling and grabbed the remote to rewind. Sure a nuff, that's what you said. Makes the best flavor, most crisp pickles I've canned. Baker's Creek made a big sell to me. I got my shipment within a week. Thanks! I never could raise a garden in Mesa, nor Eager, AZ as soon as the days got long enough for my plants to really grow, it was so hot they would burn up.

I order from Johnny's, NE Seed, and Baker Creek pretty much every year. Johnny's Seeds has excellent quality but very low quantities of seeds per packet (15 seeds @ $4.75 for my favorite hybrid snacking tomato...ouch.) and very high shipping costs. NE Seed has excellent packaging in resealable mylar packs, good quantities, good germination, and is slightly cheaper than Johnny's overall. I've ordered lots from Baker Creek when their prices used to be significantly cheaper. It's been hit or miss getting good germination from Baker Creek and they're less of a value now.........so I still order a bunch but now I don't bank on them. I'm slowly becoming disenchanted with them and feel they need to work on quality control before more advertising. Seeds from High Mowing and Fedco have been excellent and productive for us but their high prices generally have me only buying a few packs every year. Surprisingly, some little cutsie endcap display packages of organic seeds from Walmart were coated and grew some of the best Habanero and Jalapeno peppers I'd ever grown. Our farm gardens on the philosophy that as long as you plant enough you'll never go hungry.

Got mine ordered last week, just waiting for one more shipment to get in. I made my selections and came back a week later to actually place the order only to find 50% of my selections already out of stock. Took 4 orders but I was able to get everything I needed aside from bok choy which I could not find from a place that would get it to me by the time I need to have in the ground. Unfortunatly I had to go hybrid a bit more than I wanted but still excited for this years choices. Should be a very colorful garden this year.

The weather was so insane this last year, I have seen new buds for months, hesitated several times on cutting things back, some still crackin...I’ve been starting seeds since Jan 4th, every two weeks, almost all are successful. I’m going to keep starting and sewing and trying, I may be able to grow food for 9 months solid. 🤷‍♀️. Everything has a wee lil greenhouse, almost everything’s doing wonderful 🥳🤷‍♀️🥳🤷‍♀️🥳

I bought seeds in December from MiGardener and Baker. I remembered last year and the shortages. I plant many kinds of peppers from mild to the hottest ones, from all over the world. I also plant Tobasco and make my own hot sauces with them and other peppers. One of the sauces I make has a half cup of tobasco and 3 habanero peppers. People love it. But most prefer hotter sauces using Carolina Reapers, ghost, habanero, tobasco and others. I use seasonings with them, like onion and garlic powder and liquid smoke. I use red wine vinegar as the liquid. People love these different recipes I’ve made. People in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Kansas.

No strawberries? That and tomatoes are my favorites. Just a head up on petunias, yes they're gorgeous but they need weekly BT treatment as they are major cabbage moth attractants. I have sworn off petunias forever. I would suggest sunpatiens instead or Benary's Giant's zinnias. Marigolds are definitely a great choice, they really help in the garden and brighten up everything.

Growing onions is like falling off a log, simple. I plant my seeds in a 1020 tray, by filling the tray 3/4 with soil then sprinkle in the seed then cover with more soil, no more than 1/4 inch, then keep watered. Onions will sprout in cool weather but do best above 70F, I use a heated grow bed set at 78F. If the tops get too tall just give them a haircut with some scissors, helps keeping more sturdy transplants. When you transplant you can plant in rows with 4 inch spacing, or 8 inch spacing in bunches up to 6 in each space. Growing onions in a bunch gives a lot of spring onions to pick early, then what is left over will grow into large onions, but maybe slightly smaller than individual planted onions. When transplanting the roots will become entangled, but don't worry about breaking them they are real tough and will with stand the pulling apart just fine. Onions will survive freezing down to 18F, but will lose the tops if they get real cold, mine even got snow covered last year. Will be starting 30 trays in about 3 weeks here, I sell a lot of onions. The trick in planting onions is plant from seed early, but sets should not be planted until late May or early June, because sets will bolt if planted too early because of when the summer solstice happens in your area. Short day length causes onion sets to bolt.

I think it's also important to purchase seed with the intent of doing seed saving, at least selective saving off of the best plants. That's how you recoup your return on investment in the long run and if you get good at it, eventually you can start bartering and trading with other seed savers to increase biodiversity rather than putting everything on capital cost.

For sweet potato varieties, try Sand Hill Preservation Center (SHPC). They have 225 varieties including a lot of heirlooms. Many will not be available in 2021 due to the big wind storm that hit the mid-West last August, but they still have a large variety including some that grow well in tight soils. Also a lot of great growing information is on the site. If you want to "grow" protein for your chickens, try the variety "Beetlejuice." It seems to be a magnet for Japanese beetles (and still produces a good crop of sweet potatoes). Plant them in containers near the chicken coops and let the foliage trail onto the ground. The beetles go for the leaves and the chickens go for the beetles. (You can also do the same thing with cabbage moth larvae by planting some cabbages late in the season when you know they will be hit by the moths. When the larvae hatch out, you have free chicken feed of the best type.) SHPC also carries heirloom seeds.
