****** About Living Traditions Homestead ******
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Most houses here do not have basements. The ground is too rocky. It also doesn’t get very cold here. A strong lightbulb in the well house keeps the pipes from freezing.

I love the pig shelter you bought (and the decorating comment?) I think my backyard free-range chickens would like that. Where can I buy one? I appreciate your care and concern for your animals❤️ I also appreciate the tip about the plumber's hanger!! I am always looking for things that make life easier! I have bought so many S hooks, carabiners, and clamps but all seem pretty temporary. Thank you for sharing!!

It seems a nice project but I wonder if it would be better if the cover of the roof was transparent/clear so the natural light would enter in. It seems this way it is done there won't be natural light entering nicely into the coop? Maybe I am wrong... I just found in my own coop I made a mistake of not using clear sheets on the wall or roof and now I have to change it because I have been using electric light during the stormy days when they cannot go out. But your project is really beautiful. I love the way you set the nesting boxes.

For the well house I would also buy energy emergency blankets and attach them to the well house walls. When light is on it will reflect heat back and keep it warm. The energy emergency blankets are about a 1 or 2 dollors a piece. Just my opinion.

Try the open air coop method and deep litter method in the chicken coop for your chickens."Composted" poop and bedding produces heat in the winter months and keeps the chickens warmer. 1/4" hardware cloth will work better over the front .It blocks snow and wind and still allows plenty of fresh air for the chickens. The back is where their nests and roosts should be.A white tarp allows light and will help the chickens lay in the winter months.Keeping them in the dark is not good for them.Hope this helps!

I live in FL and where I live it drops to 34 on the worst evening in the winter. Do you think I could get away with some clear plastic sheeting without freezing chickens? They seem to gather/cluster anyway and flexible sheets on the front and back areas would allow light and block the wind. Thoughts oh chicken hoop coop masters? Thanks! (Oh, also, these are for a backyard so the house breaks most of the wind.)

Just a “Red Neck” idea... drape a garden hose over the coop against the plywood before tracing and that should give oversized edge. This might come in handy if you need to add insulation later on for temperature control. Obviously, remove the garden hose. It’s only to give you an 5/8” width or whatever size garden hose you use. Great video!!

I hope you realise sunlight or artificial light through the pupil is what is needed to trigger egg production. This is why egg production drops in the winter months with short days. No light in those coops and total darkness is a bad idea even with the free range method.

I like your videos but you guys are over-stressing about your chickens. I live in MI and am always having birds get loose from the haven (coop) I build for them. At -20-25 they don't mind. When they get "independent" I have to look for their roving nests but they still lay until around Dec.5 when they taper off. Keep the feed and water going to them and they will break back into laying after the "start" of winter to mid Jan. Photoperiodism vs hatch date and molt. Those feathers keep them warmer than you and a furnace. Want proof? dump your blankets for a couple of hours. Yeah... I thought you would agree.

Anyone w any suggestions? Im in Indiana and have had winters of mud and wetness or snow thats crusted frozen and drifted 6 ft in spots. Its fun planning for winter here 🙄

We found that you can buy a little temperature box from hardware stores. You plug it into your electrical socket, then plug you lamp light cord into that. It kicks on when the temp gets down to about 36 degrees and then shuts off when it reaches a certain temp. Saves a ton in electricity. Also we found that a 100 watt bulb works just as good and cost less to run.
Debra Brooks
Debra Brooks 2 ամիս առաջ
I would add a 4-5 inch layer of straw or hay over the Hoops and plastic over that for insulating the coop, and put double sheet of either plexi glass or plastic on the ends they get sunlight as well as being protected from the cold. we had electric lighting in ours during the cold months and the heaters you use for chicks, so water wouldn't freeze and to keep them warm. depending on how cold it gets there, and always extra straw in the nest boxes . Why not add solar lighting?

You need a winter coop and a summer coop or make adjustments where it's covered in winter. That's what I do with my budgies. Keep the wind out and the water, maybe find a way to warm it up a little and you're good to go. :) Maybe put a lamp in for when it gets cold as a heater? More of the black plastic tarp to help warm the sides by absorbing the sunlight too and keep out the wind and rain.

Kevin, I hope that outlet in the well house is protected by a GFCI breaker at the panel. Also, you really might want to put some type of anti siphon or back flow prevention on that hose bib. Especially important when you are dropping hose ends into watering troughs. Sorry if that sounds kind of bossy. The first tip could save your life, the second, keep you from getting sick.
