****** About Living Traditions Homestead ******
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Hi. Cute piglets!! Just wanted to add. Your sows seem friendly amd good moms. We used to raise Hampshires and Yorkshires . Just a note. It costs the same to feed the moms, and the 2 breeds i mentioned usually have 9 babies average, many times 12 babies. Those are nice breeds as well. More $$ in your pocket at sales time. FYI.

We are finally picking out our little piece of land this year after having to wait because of covid. We have been planning between 2 states to settle in, 1 is Kentucky other is Missouri ( in Ozarks)! We've been watching & saw how cold🤢 it's been. Stay strong & warm! We plan on staying long life subscribers to your channel & THANK YOU for all of your help! 🤗

A friendly suggestion: if your pig pens are close enough, you can make the gates open in opposite directions so that, when you open the gates, they will block off your passageway between the two pens and the pigs can walk freely from one pen to the other without having to go get a cattle panel.

There was just a house fire here in Oregon from a heat lamp for animals. PLEASE keep it away from combustibles like that plywood and bedding. Maybe you could set up some kind of alarm. Love, love, love your informative videos. Would like to see more on using the food from the freeze dryer. We are on the fence on getting one.

Have you considered a farrowing crate? There are mixed opinions but first time moms will commonly lay on their babies. Also have you considered heater instead of lamps due to risk of fire? With her milk coming in she’s really close to delivery! Good luck guys!

I heard that really cold weather is suppose to hit this month. You're going to want blankets for the pigs, esp. mama and babies. Cold wind comes through any cracks and can set a bad chill, esp. on wet newborns. So I don't think that it could be too warm in that barn for her when babies come. I was think of them being cold and shivering because they'll be wet newborns.

We love seeing the pigs!! Pigs are next year's project for us. This year it is meat rabbits!! Will you have any Silver Fox Trios available for sale soon? We have our cages all ready and live in the Fordland area. Btw my husband likes the metal cutting tool. It will come in handy for the rabbit tractors.

If she has few really tiny ones take them out and bottle feed them. Yes I grew up on a hog farm and we did have a few the gave birth during the winter time. We learn from our mistakes and really tiny ones didn't survive. So we take them inside the house and bottle feed them. The area is to small for the mother pig and baby's. Mom will want to move around inside without hurting the babies. And the light is to low because mom will stand-up and touch the lamp. Bring the plywood up higher to keep the heat in. That's just my opinion.

Lucky pigs!! Charlie reminds me of a pig we raised for butcher named P. Sizzle (lol). He was like a big dog! What made you guys decide to switch over to having your own breeders? I'd love to see some "nerdy math" on the cost efficiency of having your breeding stock as opposed to just raising for butcher. My husband is a big numbers guy, I always use your videos to ease my husband's mind when it comes to starting new adventures on our homestead. ❤ God Bless You all!

Seems like there are a lot of pig experts in the comments 🤣🤣🤣 This all reminds me of having kids. The first baby is in a perfect sanitary environment... the second is not so much.... 3rd and 4th are in a diaper only crawling around in the dirt and putting god only knows what in their mouth. They estimate there are 6 million feral hogs in the US so I guess it's possible for pigs to farrow without human assistance. But I'm pretty sure you guys will be there to help!! Good for you! 🤠🤗

Just some advice don't ever hang a heat lamp from the cord use a chain. Biggest problem people hang from the cord causes fire . Always use a chain on the hook to hang And don't tie knot in cord. Just advice. 👍

We have babies here in single digit temperatures often. A heat lamp should do just fine. Sending prayers for healthy babies your way. One of our sows had a litter three days ago she took 12 hours to have the entire litter she delivered her after birth before she delivered one of the piglets and she had two stillborns so we had already decided that this labor was too hard on her to continue breeding her but then over the course of the last three days she has laid on and killed all of the remaining piglets. She does not seem to care when they squeal and did not get up so that they could move away from her. We are extremely saddened by this as of course it's terrible to ever have death on the farm and it has also set us back 3 months worth of pork production so now we will have to find piglets locally and quickly.

Put some red wigglers on your hay bale and maybe some juicy stuff and it will make it's own pig food farm! All their favorites, bugs, grubs, worms and dirt! In my operation, Charlie is on the barbi as soon as the girls are bred. One of his sons will take his place, or be traded for another boar piglet. Sows get replaced after the second farrowing, and on it goes. Only feeding stock during the growth phase, not maintaining a giant frame of 450 lbs!
