Today we are making homemade lard! Lard has gotten a bad reputation but recently medical professionals are starting to change their mind and claiming that lard is actually good for you!

Peter didn't understand the dream knowing about the unclean food so it could not be about food but about not calling samaritan in his days unclean. Also eating with unwashed hands is not about the food but what's in the heart.

We used lard for cooking and ate fresh vegetables especially green leafy vegetables at every meal. Our snacks were fruits and sweet potatoes as much as we wanted. We were very healthy and was never sick. Then my mother saw an advertisement for TV dinners and started to purchase it. That's when we began to get sick.

3yrs ago I rendered 5lbs of leaf lard, I ran it through the grinder and rendered in the oven, next ladled into hot qt canning jars, covered lids and rings and put in a cool place all jars sealed, my question is,,,,, is it safe to use I did not "can" it with a water bath it looks fine, if not can it be saved?

My cousin who is a nutrtiinist all ways says old fats good,she means lard,butter st family gsthering we alwsys gave a lot if cream too! We are all very healthy!,my son us a senior in college, each yesr new roomies it takes him a few weeks and he gas tge whole house switched overnto butter,every time he home & sees my jsrbof bavon dripping in the fridge, and the lard, he give mea bug thumbs up& even bugger smile! I found ways to set the fat in black crock pots with lids, like an insert from a crockpot and sit it in the sun, it bakes down really nicely.

A faster way to do your lard is the put it on open flame in a big big hot bowl whatever it will also give you it will also give you the fried pork relines that a lot of people like and they're great for making cornbread renders better and faster.

Hey thanks for this video. I watched it last night and as it happens I’m picking up my pig from the butcher today. They didn’t save any back fat for me because I didn’t think of making lard until last night. But when I spoke with them today prior to going down for pick up, I asked if they had any fat that I could purchase to make lard. He said yes, he would put a box aside for me because they’re cutting some pigs today. And he also told me that there would be no charge for it. So bonus lard! And I have you guys to thank. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💖

We bought 15 ducklings last summer and when they were old enough we let them out into open and the first week a hawk swooshed down and grabbed duck almost in front of us... Just like that we’ve lost three almost grown ducks.... Then a fox sneakily one by one stole 8 ducks... Bad idea to have ducks roaming free... Chickens keep closer together and rooster makes allot of noise, and we didn’t lose any of them... But we had to close them in anyway, because a fox wouldn’t go away.... I could see him running away every time roster starts to make big noise ....

I wouldn't worry too much what breed when you are first starting. Any standard breed or cross will do if you are just raising them to process. Look on craigslist for 'Feeder pigs". I wouldn't recommend breeding your own when you first start. First just learn to raise them to butcher size. - Kevin

Margarine is one (1) molecule away from being Tupperware/plastic. Margarine is like gossip........easy to spread and bad for your heart!

Just a quick thought. If you soak feed for birds, it will almost double in amount and also will become more easily digestible with nutrients more absorbed. Many say to ferment it a little but I don't leave it that long in water. Just a few days and I add apple cider vinegar to the water the feed soaks in. I don't soak pallets foods. Just the grains.

We live in South Georgia. We can’t let our chickens out. Snakes, coyotes and birds of pray, are a major issue. We did however build them a very big yard. So, they have lots of room to roam. We made it out of chicken wire, covered with snake fence. One snake still got in and killed 3 chickens. We also saw signs where a bird tried to get in through the top.

Stationed in Europe about 15 years ago and had gotten to the point where my cholesterol levels were consistently well over the acceptable levels and I had to attend a "wellness clinic" that would be taught by a local national (German) medical representative. The day came for the clinic and within the first 30 minutes, I was shaking my head, as everything being taught was counter to the previous 3 decades of what was being taught about oils/fats/hydrogenated oils(margarine)/etc. The biggest aspects regarding oils were to stay away from most all oils with the exception of Palm oils and Coconut oils...absolutely DO NOT EAT margarine of any type! The other aspect was on Lard, to which I do remember my great grandmother, grandmother and my mom leaving the container of lard on the stove which was kept covered, but NEVER thrown out, and always reused. The german dietician explained that your body's cells do not know what to do with long-chain structures such as those in modified oil fats. Your body has always known what to do with animal or simple saturated fats, as we had been consuming them for thousands of years and their molecular structure does not attach to the artery walls such as the long-chain cholesterol deposits from modified oil fats. I left the clinic with eyebrows definitely raised, and decided "what the heck" my great grandmother had lived to 98, grandmother to 97 and my mom is still as energetic as ever as a 74 year old as she was when she was raising us kids in the 1970's, and they all had always had lard to cook with. We immediately threw out all the oils and margarine and went to one of the German markets there in Stuttgart (where lard is always easy to find in all german grocery markets) and have not used regular oils since. I had to go back and get cholesterol levels checked with my primary physician at regular 90-day intervals and they levels went from the initial 240-260 range, down to 140-170, with the LDL at 60 and HDL at 120. That was the only change to our diet we made. Those of you that have never had the chance to have German "Pommes Frittes" (french fries) cooked in Lard, must try those if you get to Germany, or get some lard from your local meat market/butcher shop and make your own! Oh BTW...a little embarrassing, but I'll go ahead and put it out there. I had started experiencing bouts of ED in my 40's at the same timeframe I went to the "wellness clinic" event and within about 4 months after I had just made the changes going to lard and real butter, the ED went away totally and has never been an issue since. Not sure what the connection was there, but just wanted to mention that aspect. Anyway, best regards to the Living Traditions Homestead couple and good on ya' for putting this out there!

I think there source of the pork fat is very important, because fat can store undesirable chemicals, e.g. making one's own lard from store bought pig fat is probably not a good idea. Because you, Kevin and Sarah, raise your own Idaho Pasture Pigs, your source of fat is as organic as it can get!

I've been using lard for ages. A year ago, I became Torah Obsevant and don't eat anything from the pig now. Now I use Beef Tallow, but haven't checked the healthiness of it. I do know that it a lot more dense and very hard when left in the fridge! Lol

I use lard all the time. I save my bacon grease to and even my slow cooked pork butt. I also save my tallow from my grind burger. I don’t have a farm, maybe some day. So all of my meet is store bought, I know it’s not the best but I they my best. I love all of the information you give. Thanks for another great video!

Very nice, I just purchased lard from White Oak Pastures farm in Bluffton GA..... Yummy..... Wonderful farm/company....... In regular grocery store just take a whiff of the lard on the shelf..... OMG smells rancid.. yucky...... Going to make tamales..... Using the fresh lard in the Masa flour....... Nope I'm not Mexican just like ALL KINDS of food...... HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone..... The big corporate health food industry destroyed our body's and health with their artificial/substitution crap. Now the big thing is anti gluten. Like the french with their butter, my Mexican family/cousins used only lard in all their foods. And they were extremely healthy. My Aunt is going on 80 and my Uncle died at 92 and was at the time building rooms onto their house on his own right up to his death. I stopped eating fake foods (margarine! YUCK) years ago. Now only real butter and olive oil (I live on olive oil) and very happy for it and eat very well, Although I'm not a lard eater but will only eat tortilla's made with pure lard (night and day difference).

The idea that natural fat being unhealthy began with Russian scientists feeding rabbits cholesterol in the late 19th century. (Rabbits are herbivores, nature intended them to use PLANT Cholesterol, stanols, not Cholesterol from meats) This was built on in the 1950's Seven Countries Study by Dr Ancel Keys. Purely observational and published without the complete days set. Keys lost his beautiful little J shaped curve when he included the data from all 22 countries. He didn't control for things such as smoking, eating a high sugar diet etc etc. Thus, we have been told Fat causes high cholesterol, high cholesterol causes heart disease. Later, Keys tested his hypothesis in the Minnesota Coronary Trial. Reanalysis of the FULL data set in the late 2010's found Replacing saturated fat with lineolic acid from corn oil did reduce cholesterol, it did not reduce heart disease. His own theory, proven false but his own research. However, it hasn't stopped the anti fat craziness in the least. And uncle sam is just tickled pink to ignore the fact that these traditional fats BUILT this nation. Those old timers didn't have fake fats until Crisco was marketed. Just boil it down to common sense folks. Food is intended to sustain life and health Foods created by nature are better than foods created by a factory. We were not a sick society until we moved away from eating food created by nature and getting busy doing something. Just eat REAL food.

OLD TIME lard Especially if the hogs are raised traditionally. That junk in the store is hydrogenated just like margarine Hydrogenated products are trans fat. Uncle Sam let's them lie on the label if the trans fat level is less than half a green per serving portion. Who uses just the serving size of ANYTHING???

My granny did not have a fridge, she kept her fresh lard in canning jars in the creek year round. She only rendered once a year. She also made what we call cracklins with the skin which you can later soak and add to corn bread.

I get some of the animals are raised specifically for meat. But I think I would have a difficult time on slaughter day. Watching them interact with you while you were feeding them it's like they each have their own "personality". Especially knowing they came to trust that you are the one taking care of and feeding them. I am by no means a vegetarian or animal rights activist, I eat my share of meat.

Three years have been spent researching lard and then trying to buy (leaf lard for my pie crusts and some other baking , etc.) ; I find it and it's 12 .99 /lb. and Amazon is where I can find it . Funniest bit ? We live in TX and I can't find it anywhere . Beef lard from grocery store really bothers my stomach and I can taste in the pastry . You guys ROCK !! XXOO Karen M.

Lard is most certainly , Not healthy ! It breaks down the veins , at least that's what the heart doctor says ... End of story ... Its also mentioned several times in the bible to not eat the fat of any animal .. So both medical profession as well as biblically .... Not eating that garbage and 6 months later y'all make another video saying " we made another " ...

I enjoy your videos so much. I don’t even live on a farm, but always thought I’d love the life. I love the out doors and love animals. I know it’s very hard work though. You don’t have the luxury of taking a few days off. Animals have to be tended to! Still, I’m sure it’s a different kind of hard work...very rewarding physically, mentally, and spiritually. I love you guys. Would like to meet you and the animals someday. Have a wonderful Christmas and stay safe!

Home made lard is great ....its really good for butter tarts pastry.l did it one year and it was ab.

When I was a child people would make their own hair tonic using lard I forget all the ingredients it would lay your hair good and had a good smell you could make a crap load of it cheap

I only use lard and tallow now, I found I don’t have any heartburn anymore. I occasionally use butter but I don’t feel as good when I do.
