****** About Living Traditions Homestead ******
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

The reason we use an unroller on our farm is that there is no topsoil....when I unroll a bale...even an old "garbage" bale....the bale spreads the "seed bank" in a broader area....but....we have more cows and thus a higher impact area when we put out the ring....I really love the basket type hay ring for feeding hay....it's like you guys said..it's all about what works for you...we've got very very poor soil on our farm...unrolling is rebuilding that soil....can't wait for spring!!! Great vid guys!

Other than vets, did you consult any old time cattle ranchers regarding Henry's symptoms? From the sparce descriptions I've picked up in your vids, it sounds similar to when we lost a calf that had gotten into some moldy feed/hay... Also make sure there are no cockle burrs in your hay, that'll kill 'em too... We are praying for ya'all. God Bless!

You made the right choice... Bale ring is the way to go for a small herd... check out Oklahoma State University Website for a study they did a while back regarding types of bale feeders. They concluded that the ring with a "SKIRT" wastes LESS hay than one like you bought. But not to fret, a skirt can easily be added DIY style. Also don't throw away your old one. If you don't want to re-build it, there are probably other homesteaders or small cattle operations that would LOVE to have it. If you were closer to me I'd haul it off for ya and even pay ya something for it. LOL ;>))

Did you say what happened? We got 2 calves that I'm sure didn't get colostrum and we tube fed them hoping for a miracle but it just didn't happen. They didn't make it. So sad. So hard. I tried to make the sad situation a learning experience. Talked to vets and friends and it seems colostrum is literally life or death. SO I will get calves from a smaller dairy with less of a work load. I don't think anyone was hoping to not get them colostrum just so many cows and so much responsibly they must have been slipped past. That is my reason WHY I keep my own cow for milk. It brings humanity back to the dairy you eat. NOT THAT I THINK THE FARMER IS NOT HUMAN. They do their very best to feed American and get paid nothing and work their butts off. My 1 cow makes way more milk then we need and we treat her like a queen and not many cows get the love and care because its simply not possible to love and care for 1100 cows like we love our 1. I hope you figure it out so it can be a lesson for us all and hopefully a lesson no one needs to learn again. Hopefully it is something that can be prevented. I hate learning lessons in your shoes. It is the WORST. But it might could help us one this side learn too. Thanks for sharing. It means alot to me.

I don't have a cattle farm but would consider building a skid to go beneath the hay ring. Each time the ring needed moved one would just need to hook it to the tractor and pull to new location. Hay inside the ring would stay dryer since it's off the ground and soil wouldn't mix with the hay. I suspect the taste wouldn't be encouraging a cow to eat soil contaminated hay.

So sorry about Henry the calf...maybe it was the milk fever that the mother cow was getting let off some sort of toxin? He sure looked healthy for those first weeks and when you picked up the other calf. Maybe give Dr. Pol from Michigan a call? He has a T.V. show and has been doing vet work for 60 years? He is an old Dutchman that was raised on a dairy farm in Holland and he know a lot on cows.

Youv'e probably already had to put him down, just wanted to let you know that you're not alone. Getting ready to put down my loyal, faithful, loving companion of 14 years, my dog Skunk. He got sick around Thanksgiving and we've thrown everything at it that we could, spent almost $1,000, and the vet says he's just....old. He is almost 90 in dog years, and has severe arthritis, and the winter is taking it's toll. Sometimes he doesn't recognize us and barks at us like we're intruders. All of that I can handle, but to watch him struggle to get up because he's in so much pain - no, I'm not going to let that go on. He's been too good a friend. God bless you guys. I know it's hard, but you're doing the right thing.

So sorry for your loss. 😢 Its a hard thing to decide to do but it’s harder to see them suffer. Growing up on a farm we’ve had several animals that didn’t make it for reasons out of our control. I remember being little and not understanding what happened to them. My Dad used to tell me that they were sick and they went to heaven so God could watch over them. 😢 God Bless🙏🏻

you must get a hay ring with the bottom enclosed on the lower sides way less waste .that is what we use.the lower 1to 1.5 feet of the lower is solid sided so the hay does not go out on the ground.

Have followed you guys for ages, love how you care for each other and how you work so well together. We have a small acreage and various critters. There are always hard things that need to be done when you are the type that truly care for your animals. I have a good neighbor who is a dairy farmer. When there are animals that need putting down on his farm I have looked after that for him. Likewise when we had a horse go down he has done the same for us. It is still hard but being a step back does make the task easier.

I love animals.... We live by the big stretch of the woods, and own 3 acres of it.... All kinds of animals are coming around to our yard, and we enjoy them ..... We also have pets... As much as we love our pets, I would never ever let my pet suffer an illness.... I can never understand when people treat their pets for cancer or other diseases when pet really is hurting.... Why let it suffer?... I believe that people are really selfish when they don’t put down their pets and stop the suffering.... Allot of people have no problems to do an abortion, but are keeping a sick animal alive and letting it suffer....

Very sorry about little Henry. I hope Hope and the other calf aren't too devastated. I wanted to offer a suggestion for the old hay ring. It could be a cool decorative trellice /archway for somewhere in your garden. Maybe an entry to a sitting nook in the garden. You would just need to trim off the broken bits and turn it on it's side. I'm not sure which would be more stable, burying part of the bottom or cutting it off. I guess you could play with that a bit.

AUTOPSY Do an autopsy. Probably going to find a blockage in one of the stomachs. Had something very similar to Henry's. No more than we cut into our calf we noticed that the small intestine didn't look good. Found a blockage of plastic it had eaten in last stomach going into small intestine. This is something you can do yourself or have a vet do. I would think a vet would do it for little to no cost just to see what happened, especially if this condition left everyone scratching their heads.
